Open Competition: Innovation Product Competition – Vocational Championship 2026

Medan, September 30, 2026 – The Faculty of Vocational Education, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), invites students to participate in the Innovation Product Competition, which is part of the Vocational Championship 2026 series.

This competition serves as a platform for Diploma Program, Applied Bachelor's Degree Program, and Undergraduate Program students to develop innovative ideas into practical products that are oriented toward user needs and have the potential to be developed on a broader scale (scalable).

Through this competition, participants are encouraged to transform their technical and vocational competencies into real solutions that can be implemented and provide benefits to society and industry. Submitted works may take the form of physical products, digital products, production process innovations, or service innovations.

Each innovation must be related to at least one Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) from SDG 1, 2, 3, 4, or 17. Participants must also demonstrate the problem they aim to solve, target users or beneficiaries, evidence of development and validation, as well as the feasibility and potential impact of the innovation being developed.

Competition Stages
The Innovation Product Competition consists of two stages:

  1. Preliminary Round – Online
    Participants submit videos and photographic documentation of their innovative products for the initial assessment process.
  2. Final Round – Online
    Teams that qualify for the final round will give an online presentation via Zoom before the panel of judges.

The assessment will consider various aspects, including product functionality and technical quality, the quality of video and photographic documentation, benefits to users or society, feasibility and development potential, as well as the team's ability to present and defend their innovation before the judges.

Participant Requirements and Terms

  1. Open to active Diploma Program, Applied Bachelor's Degree Program, and Undergraduate Program students, whose student status must be verifiable during the competition period.
  2. Each team must consist of exactly 3 students from the same higher education institution.
  3. Each team must be supervised by 1 lecturer from the same higher education institution and faculty as the Team Leader or one of the Team Members.
  4. All submitted documents and materials must be in English.
  5. Each team must appoint 1 Team Leader as the main contact person.
  6. Team roles are recommended to include a Team Leader, a technical/product person in charge, and a person in charge of impact, business feasibility, and communication.
  7. Each student may participate in a maximum of 2 competition categories throughout the Vocational Championship 2026 series, namely once as a Team Leader and once as a Team Member.

Specific Requirements for Works
Submitted works must:

  1. Address a clearly identified problem or opportunity.
  2. Be directly related to at least one of SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 3, SDG 4, or SDG 17.
  3. Have clearly identified target users or beneficiaries.
  4. Be supported by evidence of development, testing, simulation, field trials, or user feedback as a form of validation.
  5. Be safe, ethical, and compliant with applicable laws and regulations.
  6. Be the team's own work or an adaptation/continuation of an existing work, with the sources and new contributions clearly explained.

  3. Work Submission Deadline: October 28, 2026
  4. Preliminary Round: October 29–30, 2026
  5. Final Round: October 31–November 4, 2026
  6. Winner Announcement: November 7, 2026

Works that are purely theoretical without a prototype, Minimum Viable Product (MVP), or evidence of implementation are not permitted. Likewise, routine assignments without meaningful innovation, promotion of other parties' commercial products without substantive innovation, and works that are unsafe, illegal, discriminatory, misleading, or violate the intellectual property rights, privacy, copyright, trademarks, or confidentiality of other parties are not permitted.

Innovations whose advantages lie solely in aspects of packaging, decoration, or marketing are also not included in the criteria for permitted works. In addition, submission of the same product by different teams is not permitted.
