Diploma Program In Informatics Engineering, Faculty Of Vocational Education Usu Holds Artificial Intelligence Workshop: “build With Ai” With Google Developer Group

Medan, May 16, 2026 — The Diploma Program in Informatics Engineering, Faculty of Vocational Education, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held an Artificial Intelligence Workshop: Build with AI in collaboration with Google Developer Group as an effort to enhance students’ knowledge and competencies in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The event took place on Saturday, May 16, 2026, and was attended by speakers, the Vice Dean for Education, Student Affairs, and Alumni Affairs, the Secretary of the Diploma Program in Informatics Engineering, lecturers, and students.

The workshop was officially opened by the Vice Dean for Education, Student Affairs, and Alumni Affairs of the Faculty of Vocational Education USU, Dr. Solahuddin Nasution, S.E., M.SP. In his remarks, he stated that the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology presents significant opportunities for students to improve their competencies and competitiveness in the workforce.

“Artificial Intelligence has become an important part of digital transformation across various sectors. Therefore, students need to have adaptive and innovative abilities to utilize AI technology positively and productively,” he said.

Following this, remarks were delivered by the Secretary of the Diploma Program in Informatics Engineering, Faculty of Vocational Education USU, who expressed appreciation for the implementation of the workshop as a learning platform and a space for students to develop competencies in digital technology and AI.

A representative from Google Developer Groups Medan also delivered remarks emphasizing the importance of collaboration between academia and technology communities in facing digital era advancements. It was also highlighted that events such as Build with AI provide students with opportunities to explore the latest technological trends while enhancing practical skills relevant to industry needs.

The workshop featured two speakers who delivered materials on the development and implementation of AI technology. The first speaker, Alvin Prayuda Juniarta Dwiyantoro, presented a topic titled “Agentic RAG with ADK, MCP Toolbox, and Cloud SQL.” In this session, students were guided through hands-on practice to build an autonomous food tour agent (virtual culinary assistant) using the Gemma language model and the Agent Development Kit (ADK). Participants were provided with step-by-step guidance using the Model Context Protocol (MCP) Toolbox architecture to connect their AI agents to a PostgreSQL database in Cloud SQL declaratively through YAML configuration files. This enabled the AI agent to perform vector embedding searches (such as filtering taste descriptions and dietary preferences) without requiring complex database logic.

The second speaker, Dr. Ir. Joan Santoso, S.Kom., M.Kom., delivered a presentation titled “GemmaVerse: An Open Model for Your AI System,” which discussed the utilization of open AI models as a flexible and innovative solution for developing artificial intelligence systems.

The event was conducted interactively through presentations, discussions, and hands-on practice with the speakers. Participants showed great enthusiasm throughout the sessions and actively engaged in discussions regarding the opportunities and challenges of AI implementation in the future.

Through the implementation of the Build with AI Workshop, the Diploma Program in Informatics Engineering, Faculty of Vocational Education, Universitas Sumatera Utara hopes to continuously encourage the development of excellent, adaptive human resources who are ready to face digital transformation in the era of artificial intelligence-based technology.
