Seminar on Strengthening Information Literacy through the Development of Library Resources

Medan, May 19, 2026 – The Diploma Program in Library of the Faculty of Vocational Education at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) organized a Seminar on Strengthening Information Literacy through the Development of Library Resources as an effort to improve understanding and information literacy skills in the digital era. The event was conducted online via Zoom and attended by the speaker, the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation and Internationalization, the Head and Secretary of the Study Program, lecturers, and students.

The seminar was opened with remarks from the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation and Internationalization of the Faculty of Vocational Education, Junedi Ginting, S.Si., M.Si. He stated that information literacy has become an essential skill amid rapid technological developments and the increasing flow of information. He emphasized that libraries play a strategic role as centers of learning resources and knowledge development for the academic community as well as the wider society.

The activity continued with a presentation by speaker Huller G.D. Sinaga, who serves as a Library Assessor for the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia and as an Advisor for Librarianship and Reading Interest Development at the Medan City Library and Archives Office. He discussed the importance of information literacy in supporting learning and decision-making in the digital era. In his presentation, he explained the four pillars of information literacy: the ability to identify information needs, access and retrieve information, critically evaluate information sources, and use information ethically.

In addition, he also explained strategies for developing library resources through improving librarian competencies, developing collections and information technology, innovating library services, and optimizing information literacy services for library users.

Seminar participants showed great enthusiasm throughout the event, from the presentation sessions to the interactive discussions with the speaker. Various questions and ideas regarding strengthening information literacy and innovating library management became part of the seminar’s dynamic discussions.

Through this activity, the Diploma Program in Library of the Faculty of Vocational Education of USU hopes to contribute to enhancing the culture of information literacy and encouraging the development of adaptive and innovative libraries that are capable of meeting society’s needs in the digital era.
