Being good with numbers isn’t enough, accountants need to be good speakers too!
Through VOC4SI Level Up Vol. 1, students learned the secrets of public speaking to boost their confidence in front of an audience.
Medan, 16th September 2025 – The Public Sector Accounting Diploma 4 study program, in collaboration with the Accounting Bachelor's degree program, successfully held the VOC4SI Level Up Vol. 1 webinar with the theme "Speaking Beyond the Numbers.". The event took place online via Zoom Meeting and was attended by participants from various backgrounds, including students, lecturers, alumni, and the general public.
The event was opened by Sambas Ade Kesuma, S.E., M.Si, Ph.D, Ak, CA, Head of the Public Sector Accounting Diploma 4 Study Program. He emphasized that the accounting profession is often perceived as a “behind-the-scenes” profession, even though more and more accountants now need to appear in public. Therefore, mastering of public speaking has become an essential skill for accounting practitioners to communicating effectively. The event was hosted and moderated by Yunita Sarah Siregar, S.E., M.Si, from the Public Sector Accounting Diploma 4 Study Program.
The webinar featured Dr. Ira Mirawati, M.Si., a renowned educational content creator and Head of the Communication Management Program at Universitas Padjadjaran, as the keynote speaker. She highlighted the importance of public speaking skills for accountants, not only to be proficient in working with numbers but also to effectively deliver their analyses in a clear, persuasive, and communicative manner. In her presentation, Dr. Ira emphasized three components of speaker credibility: expertise, trustworthiness, and attractiveness. She further noted that thorough preparation, self-confidence, and emotional management can help transform nervousness into positive energy, ensuring that messages are conveyed optimally.
“The health of an organization is first reflected in the performance of its accounting division,” emphasized Dr. Ira. The data and analyses presented by accountants often from the basis for decision-making. Therefore, the ability to craft narratives, choose the right diction, and manage intonation, pace, and body language are inseparable professional skills.
Through this webinar, participants are expected to gain a deeper understanding that communication skills are a key factor in enhancing professional value. Moreover, these skills are also applicable to classroom presentations and daily academic activities. This webinar also marks the opening of the VOC4SI Level Up webinar series, designed to equip students with skills beyond the aspect of accounting, preparing them to be more competitive in the job market.
