Jakarta, July 29, 2026 – As part of its commitment to improving the quality of vocational education that is responsive to technological developments and workforce needs, the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation, Faculty of Vocational Education, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) conducted an academic visit to the Metrology Management Unit (Unit Pengelola Metrologi/UPM) of DKI Jakarta Province. The visit was conducted by Subhan Fahmi Nasution, S.Si., M.Si., a lecturer of the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation, as part of efforts to strengthen partnership networks with government institutions working in the field of legal metrology.
The visit served as a strategic opportunity to establish synergy between higher education and the professional sector in supporting the development of practice-oriented, innovative vocational education that responds to industry needs. Through this collaboration, the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation at USU continues to strive to provide learning experiences that are relevant to developments in measurement and instrumentation technology.
During the meeting, the participants discussed potential areas of cooperation in education, the development of Teaching Factory (TEFA), curriculum alignment, the implementation of internships and fieldwork programs, as well as strengthening students’ competencies through practice-based learning. The discussion also highlighted the importance of aligning learning materials with developments in regulations, metrology technology, and workforce needs to ensure that graduates possess competencies relevant to professional demands.
In addition to the discussion, the visit included a tour of the metrology laboratories managed by the UPM of DKI Jakarta Province. During the visit, the lecturer directly observed various testing and calibration laboratories, including laboratories for mass, length, volume, and temperature, as well as legal metrology laboratories used for the verification and re-verification of measuring instruments. The laboratory visit provided practical insights into laboratory management systems, testing procedures, the use of nationally standardized equipment, and the implementation of quality assurance in measurement processes.
Through the laboratory visit, the lecturer gained valuable insights into the application of technical standards, measuring equipment management, and quality control processes, which are essential for ensuring accurate, reliable, and accountable metrology services. These experiences are expected to enrich the learning process within the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation and serve as a reference for developing practical courses and the Teaching Factory within the Faculty of Vocational Education at USU.
This activity reflects the commitment of the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation at USU to expanding its national partnership network while providing more practice-oriented learning through collaboration with government institutions. The synergy established is expected to contribute to curriculum development, enhancement of lecturer and student competencies, applied research, and the strengthening of a quality culture in the fields of metrology and instrumentation.
Through this initiative, the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation, Faculty of Vocational Education, Universitas Sumatera Utara, continues to strengthen its role as a provider of vocational education committed to producing professional, competent graduates who are prepared to compete nationally and globally in the fields of metrology and instrumentation.
