Diploma Program

The Diploma Program in Library at the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) was established in 1985. It is a vocational study program that provides education in library science. Currently, this program has received Very Good (A) accreditation.

To prepare students to become professionals, we carry out practicum activities at the USU Library as part of our learning. The USU Diploma Program in Library is committed to producing graduates who are competent in documentation and information and who become expert consultants in library automation and library management for information centers or libraries in North Sumatra and other regions in Indonesia.

History

1984

The Diploma Program in Library was initially one of the Study Programmes under the Department of Library and Information Studies (DSPI), Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara. This study program was opened in the 1985/1986 academic year, based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture No.131/DIKTI/Kep/1984, on 2 November 1984.

2000

Graduates of the Diploma Program in Library produce skilled personnel in the field of information institution managers and information managers. Along with the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), there is a demand for graduates of library experts equivalent to a bachelor's degree. The demand for graduates in the job market prioritizes undergraduate graduates with expertise, especially in ICT-based librarianship. This became the basis for opening the Library Science Extension Study Programme in 2000.

2001

The extension program is a continuation of the Diploma Program in Library. On average, graduates of the Diploma Program in Library continue their studies in the extension program to obtain an Undergraduate Program in Library. Due to market needs in the fulfillment of experts in the field of Library and Information, it became the basis for opening the Undergraduate Program in Library on 4 July 2001. Based on Decree number 2284/D/T/2001, the Undergraduate Program in Library was officially opened at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara.

2018

Until 2018, the Extension Study Programme was finally closed for administrative reasons at the university level.

2019

Since 2019, the Universitas Sumatera Utara has only had 2 study programs related to Library Science: the Diploma Program in Library and the Undergraduate Program in Library and Information Science, which are still running.

2022

In 2022, all Diploma Programs moved to the Faculty of Vocational Education, USU, including the Diploma Program in Library.
