Medan, September 22, 2026 – The Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation, Faculty of Vocational Education, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held a Workshop on Weights, Measures, and Measuring Instruments (UTTP) on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the Hall of the Faculty of Vocational Education, USU. The activity served as a platform for students and lecturers to broaden their insights and understand developments in metrology, particularly in UTTP testing and competency requirements in the industrial sector. The workshop was attended by the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Internationalization; the Head of the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation; lecturers; and students.
The activity began with an opening speech by Dona Tiara Lubis, S.T., M.T., Head of the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation. In her remarks, she stated that the workshop provided students with an opportunity to gain insights and direct experience from practitioners in the field of metrology. She also emphasized the importance of students understanding the application of metrology not only academically but also in everyday life and in the industrial sector.
Next, Junedi Ginting, S.Si., M.Si., Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Internationalization, also delivered a speech. He expressed his appreciation for the organization of an activity featuring speakers from government and industry. According to him, activities such as this are important for strengthening the connection between higher education learning and the needs of the world of work while providing students with an overview of developments and challenges in the field of metrology.
In addition to the workshop, the activity also included the signing of an IA (Implementation Agreement) as a follow-up and effort to strengthen cooperation between the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation, Faculty of Vocational Education USU, and related partners.
The signing of the IA was an important part of supporting the more concrete implementation of the cooperation, particularly in the development of educational activities, improvement of student competencies, and strengthening the connection between higher education institutions and the professional and industrial sectors in the field of metrology. Following the speeches and signing of the IA, the activity continued with presentations by the speakers.
The first speaker, Badia Raja H. Siregar, Head of the Metrology Management Unit of DKI Jakarta Province, participated in the activity in a hybrid format through Zoom and presented material entitled “The Strategic Role of UTTP Testing in Ensuring Fairness in Trade.” In his presentation, he explained the importance of metrology in everyday life. Almost every activity in society is related to measurement activities, ranging from purchasing fuel, purchasing necessities at markets, using electricity and water meters, to various other activities involving measuring instruments.
The accuracy of measurement results is one of the foundations for creating fairness in trade transactions. Conversely, inaccurate measurement results have the potential to cause losses to parties involved in transactions. Therefore, testing and supervision of UTTP play an important role in ensuring that measuring instruments meet applicable requirements and provide accurate measurement results.
The next session featured Dwi Budi Prasetyo, S.T., Operations Manager of PT Dakara Prima Indonesia, who presented material entitled “Competency Readiness of Young Metrology Technicians in Facing Modern Industry.” In his presentation, he explained that metrology has three main fields, namely scientific metrology, which covers the establishment of units, measurement methods, and measurement standards; legal metrology, which is related to legal regulations, consumer protection, and fair trade; and industrial metrology, which covers measurement, calibration, and quality control.
The presentation provided students with an overview of the competency requirements for metrology technicians amid developments in modern industry. Technical competencies, an understanding of measurement standards, and the ability to apply metrology principles are important aspects that prospective professionals in the field of metrology and instrumentation need to prepare.
Next, Alno Kuniawan, S.T., M.T., Head of BSML Regional I Medan, presented material on “Field Testing Methods and Measurement Uncertainty Analysis for UTTP.” The material discussed one of the important concepts in metrology, namely measurement uncertainty.
Measurement uncertainty is a non-negative parameter characterizing the dispersion of the quantity values being attributed to a measurand, based on the information used. Understanding this concept is important in measurement and testing activities because it helps ensure that measurement results are presented accurately and can be accounted for.
Through this workshop, students of the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation had the opportunity to gain direct insights from practitioners and professionals in the field of metrology. The activity is expected to strengthen students' understanding of the application of metrology in trade and industry while preparing their competencies to respond to the continuously evolving needs of the world of work.
The UTTP Workshop also formed part of the efforts of the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation to strengthen the connection between academic learning, professional practice, metrology regulations, and industry needs, enabling students to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the role of metrology in society and the industrial sector.
