Medan, June 23–25, 2025—The Faculty of Vocational Education of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) once again affirmed its commitment to fostering international collaboration by implementing the “International Student Mobility” program in partnership with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. This program is a strategic effort to broaden vocational students' access to cross-border learning, intercultural experiences, and real-world insights into global industry practices.

The activity involved a delegation of vocational students and lecturers who participated in academic and cultural activities over three full days. One of the highlights was the industrial visit to Jeruk Madu Pak Ali Food Industry, where students were invited to observe firsthand the production and distribution management of a local SME that has successfully penetrated regional markets. Students not only learned about the food industry but also gained an understanding of how branding and innovation are key to competing in the creative economy sector.

Additionally, participants took part in a “heritage city tour” in downtown George Town, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historic landmarks such as the Kapitan Keling Mosque, Street Art Mural, St. George’s Church, and the Waterfront Esplanade provided a rich backdrop for students to explore cultural diversity, colonial history, and Malaysia’s architectural heritage.

The academic atmosphere deepened the next day with a Collaborative Teaching session delivered by Dr. Yasmin Chairunisa Muchtar, S.P., MBA, a lecturer from USU’s Faculty of Vocational Education. The session focused on Digital Leadership, Digital Engagement, and Sustainability Performance, offering strategic insights to students on leadership challenges in the digital era. This was followed by a Community Service Program involving social interactions within the UiTM environment, and a Collaborative Learning session with local students. During this session, students engaged in hands-on candy-making as a fun and practical part of their shared learning experience.

The program concluded with the presentation of souvenirs and an official visit to the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Penang. The visit featured discussions on international internship opportunities and an introduction to the role of educational diplomacy. Students also gained a deeper understanding of how the Indonesian government supports its students abroad and encourages them to contribute as national representatives.

This mobility program was more than an academic trip—it was a cross-border experience that broadened perspectives, fostered global networks, and helped shape vocational students into adaptive, inclusive, and visionary leaders.
