Medan, September 23, 2025 – The Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation, Faculty of Vocational Education, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), organized a Workshop on Basic Metrology Competency Assessment on Tuesday (23/9) at the Multipurpose Room of FMIPA USU. The workshop was conducted in a hybrid format—both in-person and via Zoom—and was attended by students aspiring to pursue careers as Civil Servants (ASN) or Government Contract-Based Employees (P3K). The event also referred to the provisions of the 2023 Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Regulation (Permenpan-RB), which stipulates that metrology competency scores account for 20% of the total selection criteria.
The program began with opening remarks by MC Dona Tiara Lubis, S.T., M.T., followed by the singing of the national anthem Indonesia Raya and a prayer reading. The event was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Vocational Education USU, Prof. Dr. Isfenti Sadalia, S.E., M.E., who emphasized the importance of understanding basic metrology competencies as an essential foundation for students to face workforce competition, particularly in the public sector.
The Director of the Directorate of Metrology, Sri Astuti, S.Si, M.Si., expressed appreciation for the organization of this workshop as a form of synergy between academia and the practical needs of the metrology sector. Meanwhile, the Head of the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation, Junedi Ginting, S.Si, M.Si, conveyed his hopes that students would take advantage of this activity to enhance their knowledge and skills in alignment with both national and international standards.
The material sessions featured expert speakers in the field. The first session was delivered online by Vera Firmansyah, M.Si., who discussed Calibration of Fuel Dispenser Pumps (PUBBM). In her presentation, Vera highlighted the importance of the calibration process in ensuring the accuracy of fuel measurements at gas stations. The calibration process not only ensures measurement precision but also serves as a form of consumer protection in accordance with legal metrology regulations.
The second session was conducted in person by Kurniati Anisa, S.T., M.Kom., who presented on Calibration of Mechanical and Electronic Weighing Instruments. She explained how the technical differences between these instruments require distinct examination methods. Students were guided through proper calibration procedures to maintain measurement standards and were provided with examples of common technical issues encountered in the field.
Continuing with Kurniati Anisa, S.T., M.Kom., the next session explored the management of Legal Metrology Unit Systems (SUML) and the implementation of ISO 17025. This session introduced students to internationally recognized principles of laboratory quality management. The implementation of ISO 17025 was underscored as a key factor in maintaining the credibility of testing and calibration results, encouraging students to understand how these quality standards are applied in professional practice.
All sessions were moderated by Lukman Hakim, S.Si, M.Si, who ensured that discussions ran smoothly and interactively. Student enthusiasm was evident during the Q&A session, where participants actively engaged in exploring metrology practices and their relevance to both industry and government institutions.
Through this workshop, students not only gained technical knowledge on basic metrology competency assessments but also acquired essential preparation for career selection processes, including ASN and P3K recruitment, with a firm understanding of applicable regulations. This activity represents a concrete form of the Faculty of Vocational Education USU’s commitment to producing competent, job-ready, and highly competitive graduates in the field of metrology.
