Medan, May 20, 2026 – The Applied Bachelor’s Degree Program in Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Faculty of Vocational Education Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), organized a workshop titled “Level Up Your PLC Skills from Beginner to Industrial Control Engineer” as part of its efforts to enhance students’ competencies in industrial control systems and automation. The activity served as a platform for learning and developing students’ practical skills to better prepare them for the continuously evolving demands of the industrial sector.

The workshop was held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, and was attended by the speakers, the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Internationalization of the Faculty of Vocational Education, the Head of the Applied Bachelor’s Degree Program in Instrumentation Engineering Technology, lecturers, as well as students from the Applied Bachelor’s Degree Program in Instrumentation Engineering Technology, the Diploma Program in Metrology and Instrumentation, and the Physics Undergraduate Program of FMIPA.

The workshop began with remarks from the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Internationalization of the Faculty of Vocational Education USU, Junedi Ginting, S.Si., M.Si., who emphasized the importance of mastering industrial automation technologies, particularly Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and SCADA systems, as essential competencies in the modern industrial era.

The next remarks were delivered by the Head of the Applied Bachelor’s Degree Program in Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Dr. Ir. Zikri Noer, S.Si., M.Si., who stated that the workshop is part of the study program’s commitment to providing industry-oriented learning. He expressed hope that students would gain new insights and practical experience relevant to the professional world through the materials and discussions with experienced speakers.

In the first session, the material was presented by Bryan Robson S., TL SCADA and Master Station at PLN, with the topic “PLC and SCADA in the Industrial World.” In his presentation, he explained the important role of PLC and SCADA systems in modern industrial automation, including their application in process control and monitoring across various industrial sectors. He also shared practical experiences regarding the implementation of control systems within PLN and the challenges encountered in operating automation-based industrial systems.

The next session was delivered by Ir. Darwin A.R., S.T., M.T., a lecturer at Politeknik Negeri Medan, who presented the topic “Industrial Control Engineer and Its Implementation.” During the session, he explained the competencies required of an Industrial Control Engineer, ranging from understanding control systems and PLC programming to integrating automation systems in industrial environments. In addition, students were introduced to the implementation of industrial control technologies in various sectors as well as career opportunities in automation and industrial engineering.

The workshop was conducted interactively with high enthusiasm from the participants. Students not only gained theoretical knowledge but also had the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers in discussions regarding the practical application of PLC technology and industrial control systems in the field.

Through this workshop, the Applied Bachelor’s Degree Program in Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Faculty of Vocational Education, Universitas Sumatera Utara hopes that students will improve their technical skills, broaden their industrial knowledge, and prepare themselves to become highly competent human resources ready to compete in the professional world, particularly in the fields of automation and industrial control systems.
