Langkat, August 22, 2026 – The Diploma Program in Food and Pharmaceutical Analyst of the Faculty of Vocational Education, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), conducted a community service activity at Pondok Pesantren Khoirotul Usroh, Stabat District, Langkat Regency. The activity combined post-disaster skin health education with training on making transparent soap and ointment using red galangal (Alpinia purpurata).
The program was led by Dr. Sri Yuliasmi, S.Farm., M.Si., Apt., with members Jane Melita Keliat, S.Si., M.Si., Prof. Dr. dr. Dewi Masyithah Darlan, DAP&E, MPH, Sp.ParK., and Bayu Eko Prasetyo, S.Farm., M.Sc., Apt. The activity also involved students of the Diploma Program in Food and Pharmaceutical Analyst as part of experience-based learning in the community.
The students needed to receive education regarding the risk of skin disorders after flooding, the importance of maintaining personal hygiene, the implementation of clean and healthy living behaviors, as well as simple steps to prevent skin problems. The team also introduced the potential of red galangal as a natural ingredient that can be developed into skin care products.
After the education session, participants took part in a demonstration and practice session on making transparent soap and ointment using red galangal extract. Participants learned about material preparation, the mixing process, preparation of the formulations, as well as product packaging and labeling.
For students, this activity provided an opportunity to apply their knowledge of natural ingredients and formulation while developing communication, teamwork, and community engagement skills. Their involvement demonstrated that vocational learning can be directly applied to help address community needs.
The products produced were used as educational media and examples of the application of scientific knowledge. Further development still requires evaluation of quality, safety, stability, labeling, and compliance with applicable regulations.
Through this activity, the Diploma Program in Food and Pharmaceutical Analyst of the Faculty of Vocational Education USU reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the three pillars of higher education while encouraging the appropriate, safe, and beneficial utilization of local natural resources.
