Medan, October 23, 2025 — The Diploma Program in Informatics Engineering, Faculty of Vocational Education, Universitas Sumatera Utara, held a workshop titled “Generative AI: Workflow Automation with n8n and Gemini AI” on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Master of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) Seminar Room, Building E, Fasilkom-TI USU. The event featured Ifan Jaya Suswanto Zalukhu, Head of Engineering at SimplyDots, as the keynote speaker. The workshop aimed to introduce the application of Generative AI technology, not only for text or image generation but also for integrating workflow automation processes using tools such as n8n and Gemini AI.
The event began at 9:00 a.m. (WIB) with participant registration, followed by an opening session led by the MC, the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, and welcoming remarks from representatives of the Dean of the Faculty of Vocational Education and the Head of the Diploma Program in Informatics Engineering, Dra. Normalina Napitupulu, M.Sc.
In his remarks, Drs. Gustanto, M.Hum., Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Vocational Education, expressed his appreciation for the initiative of the Diploma Program in Informatics Engineering in organizing this workshop as a concrete effort to introduce cutting-edge technologies to students. He also emphasized the importance of mastering Artificial Intelligence and workflow automation technologies to ensure vocational graduates can remain competitive in an increasingly digitalized industrial landscape.
Similarly, Dra. Normalina Napitupulu, M.Sc., Head of the Diploma Program in Informatics Engineering, conveyed her hope that this activity would broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of the latest advancements in Artificial Intelligence. She also underlined that adaptability to technological progress is essential for vocational graduates to play active and innovative roles in a rapidly evolving job market.
After the prayer and group photo session, the main workshop began at 10:00 a.m. and continued until 1:00 p.m. During this session, participants were introduced to how automation systems utilize artificial intelligence to enhance workflow efficiency across various information technology fields.
In the main presentation, Ifan Jaya Suswanto Zalukhu explained the implementation of n8n for developing Generative AI-based chatbots. He demonstrated how n8n can be used to automate workflows by integrating Telegram Bot and Gemini AI, enabling chatbots to respond intelligently, contextually, and in real-time.
Through a live demonstration, Ifan showcased the complete process of building an automated flow—from receiving messages on Telegram, creating system prompts for the Gemini AI Agent, to generating and returning intelligent responses to users. Participants also practiced the steps firsthand and successfully built fully functioning AI Agent chatbots using n8n. The session offered a hands-on learning experience in understanding AI workflow automation—from workflow design to real-world implementation.
The workshop concluded at 1:05 p.m. (WIB) with closing remarks from the MC. Through this activity, students are expected to gain a deeper understanding of AI implementation in workflow automation while fostering creativity and innovation to face challenges in the era of digital transformation.
