The Diploma Program in Chemistry / Applied Bachelor's Degree Program in Applied Chemistry, Faculty of Vocational Education, Universitas Sumatera Utara, held a Workshop on Enhancing Lecturer and Student Competence in Chemical Instrumentation Analysis with the theme “Enhancing Chemistry Students’ Skills in Mastering Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Instrumentation.”

Medan, October 16, 2025 — The Diploma Program in Chemistry / Applied Bachelor's Degree Program in Applied Chemistry, Faculty of Vocational Education, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), organized a Workshop on Enhancing Lecturer and Student Competence in Chemical Instrumentation Analysis with the theme “Enhancing Chemistry Students’ Skills in Mastering Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Instrumentation.” The event was held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the Engineering Hall, aiming to strengthen students’ understanding and skills in operating and analyzing data using SEM technology—one of the key instruments in material characterization. The event began with an opening by MC Tiovita Mentari Boang Manalu, followed by the singing of Indonesia Raya, joined by all participants.

Next, Drs. Albert Pasaribu, M.Sc., Head of the Diploma Program in Chemistry / Applied Bachelor's Degree Program in Applied Chemistry, delivered an opening speech highlighting the importance of mastering modern instruments such as SEM for chemistry students to remain competitive in both research and professional fields. As a token of appreciation, the committee presented a souvenir to the resource person, Reisya Ichwani, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., in recognition of her willingness to share her expertise and experience in electron-based material characterization.

During the main session, Dr. Reisya Ichwani delivered a presentation on the working principles, key functions, and applications of the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) in surface and morphology analysis. She also explained the advantages of SEM over conventional analytical methods, such as its ability to produce high-resolution images and perform elemental composition analysis using Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS).

Following the presentation, the workshop continued with a live demonstration of SEM operation at the Materials Engineering Laboratory (Metal and Non-Metal Section). In this session, students observed the step-by-step process of operating the instrument, from sample preparation to interpreting the results. The participants showed great enthusiasm as they witnessed firsthand how scientific data is visually obtained through electron microscopy technology.

Through this activity, lecturers and students of the Diploma Program in Chemistry / Applied Bachelor's Degree Program in Applied Chemistry, Faculty of Vocational Education, USU, are expected to enhance their proficiency in utilizing modern analytical instruments such as SEM and apply these skills effectively in research, laboratory practice, and industrial fields related to materials and applied chemistry.
