MEDAN – The Banking and Finance Study Program of the Faculty of Vocational Studies at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) successfully held Market Day as part of its project-based learning implementation. The event, held on Wednesday, December 10th, 2025, at the Vocational Faculty campus, served as a platform for students to demonstrate their ability to translate business theory into real-world practice.
Integrating Theory and Business Practice
This year's Market Day was more than just a typical product exhibition. The activity was designed to strengthen student competencies in applying banking, finance, and entrepreneurship knowledge. Students were challenged to manage a business comprehensively, starting from drafting business plans and calculating financial feasibility to marketing strategies and customer service.
The Head of the Banking and Finance Study Program, Beby Kendida Hasibuan, S.E., M.Si., emphasized in her opening remarks that this activity is a vital evaluation instrument for measuring graduate learning outcomes.
"We want our students to have real-world experience. Through Market Day, they learn to integrate financial concepts with actual business practices, covering both technical skills and soft skills such as business communication and teamwork," said Beby.
Supporting Higher Education Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
The implementation of Market Day is also a strategic step for the university in achieving Key Performance Indicators (IKU). Specifically, the activity supports KPI 2 (increasing student competence to be job-ready and relevant to industry needs) and KPI 3 (active involvement of lecturers in mentoring practice-based learning).
During the event, the "Business Project" course coordinator, Lailan Syafrina Hasibuan, S.E., M.Si., along with observer Suci Indah Syafitri S.E., M.Si., conducted direct observations. They evaluated product quality, pricing strategies, and the students' ability to interact with visitors, including the academic community and invited guests.
Student Innovation and Evaluation Results
Various booths managed by student groups showcased diverse and innovative business ideas. The results were impressive; there was a significant increase in student confidence when conducting sales transactions and presenting their product advantages.
While the event ran smoothly, the program department noted several points for future improvement. Future focus will be directed toward:
Sharpening financial feasibility analysis to ensure plans are more realistic.
Improving the quality of visual design and promotional media to better appeal to the digital market.
Ensuring product readiness and consistent quality.
Future Plans
As a form of ongoing commitment, student groups with high-potential products will receive further guidance through coaching sessions focused on business model development and comprehensive financial planning.
Moving forward, Market Day is planned to become an annual routine agenda at the Vocational Faculty of USU. This program is expected to serve not only as an academic learning medium but also as an incubator for creative, innovative, and productive young entrepreneurs.
