History teaches, education unites—the International Symposium serves as a reminder that small steps toward world peace begin with each of us.

Zoom Meeting, April 4, 2026 — Students from the D4 Public Sector Accounting Program at the Vocational Faculty of the University of North Sumatra participated in a one-day international symposium titled “Connecting History with the Present: Remembering the Nanpō Tokubetsu Ryugakusei,” held online via Zoom. The event brought together international academics and researchers to discuss the interconnection between history, education, and the value of peace in a global context. The symposium highlighted the experiences of Southeast Asian students in Japan in the past, particularly those affected by the Hiroshima atomic bombing.

Through the speakers’ presentations, participants were encouraged to understand that history is not merely a record of the past, but also a reflection for building a more peaceful and sustainable future.

One of the key sessions featured presentations by international academics: Professor Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, Dr. Nazirah Lee, and Dr. Yuji Hirano. They discussed the historical impact on Southeast Asian students and emphasized the importance of cross-border educational collaboration. Professor Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abdul Razak highlighted that education is not only about transferring knowledge, but also about shaping individuals who understand the meaning of peace.

“The purpose of education is to understand what peace is all about. It begins with ourselves as peaceful individuals before extending peace to the world.”

This statement underscores the role of education in fostering character, empathy, and a strong sense of humanity.

In addition, participants were given the opportunity to explore various historical documents through an exhibition related to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. The stories of individuals such as Syed Omar and Nik Yusof were also highlighted as part of the history of Southeast Asian students in Japan, providing a vivid illustration of the impact of war and the importance of learning from the past.

Student participation in this activity reflects the Public Sector Accounting Program’s commitment to broadening students’ international perspectives and fostering a global outlook. Through this experience, students are expected to gain a deeper understanding of global issues, enhance their sensitivity to human values, and prepare themselves to contribute to an increasingly interconnected professional world.

This initiative also aligns with efforts to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of quality education, peace, and global partnerships. Participation in international forums is expected to continue to grow as part of strengthening the competencies and character of vocational students.
